Brewing Good’s Savage Cats Program
If you know us at Brewing Good Coffee at all, you know we are animal lovers. One of our owner’s background is in animal rescue, so when we discovered that our shop’s neighborhood (Savage, Maryland) has a stray cat population, we got to work.
What happens with the friendly cats and kittens?
We rescue friendly stray cats from the street, provide them veterinary care, including testing, vaccines, microchip, and spay/neuter, and house them in foster homes until they are adopted. Our adoption process is outlined below.
What happens with the unsocialized cats?
We TNR unsocialized adult cats. TNR (trap-neuter-return) is the process of humanely trapping unsocialized community cats (sometimes called “feral” cats), providing them testing, vaccines, and spay/neuter, returning them to the location they were trapped, and then continuing to manage the colony by regularly feeding and monitoring for illness. Unsocialized cats who have been TNR’d are “ear-tipped”; the tip of one ear (usually the left) is painlessly removed while the cat is under anesthesia during their sterilization surgery. This has no impact on the use of their ear or quality of life and is an important signal that the cat is fixed.

Adoption Process
Step 1: Get to know the adoptable Savage Cats
Review their profiles and consider who might be a good fit for your family.
Do you live alone, have cat experience, and enjoy earning a cat’s trust and seeing them blossom?
One of our shy cats would love to come home with you!
Do you have an active household with children?
A confident, playful cat or kitten would fit right in!
Unless a specific cat’s profile says otherwise, we encourage adopting pairs of cats, especially if no other cats are present in the home. In their first year, kittens are learning lifelong socialization skills from other cats, not to mention expending some of that kitten energy with each other! The companionship of another cat is also a beneficial form of enrichment throughout their lives; they’ll always have a playmate and cuddle-buddy, even if you’re busy or away. Sometimes our Savage Cats will be a bonded pair, and must be adopted together.
Step 2: Fill out an adoption application
You can apply to adopt a specific Savage Cat or you can describe the kind of personality, etc. you’re looking for and we will match-make with one of our current fosters or hang onto your application until we have a good fit for you.
Apply to adopt a Savage Cat!
The three major conditions of adoption are:
(1) All human members of the household must be enthusiastic about the addition of a new cat. All non-human members of the household might not be on-board initially, but the quality of life of any existing animals in the home is our priority. If they don’t thrive or peacefully coexist with
(2) Adopted Savage Cats must live inside exclusively and never be allowed outdoors unmonitored and/or unrestrained.
(3) Applicants must be able to show a yearly history of veterinary care for previous or current animal companions. We will call your veterinarian’s office to confirm an applicant is in good standing. If an applicant is a first-time adopter, they must have a veterinary check up scheduled for their new companion prior to adoption, provide us with documentation of that visit, and update us if they change veterinary offices within the first year.

Note: Processing applications takes up to seven days.
Step 3: Meet the Savage Cat(s)
All of our adoptable Savage Cats are in foster homes. We host meet-and-greets at the shop once a month, during which time anyone can meet the attending cats and apply to adopt. Cats do not go home same-day at these events, unless an applicant has been pre-approved prior to the event. All human members of a household must meet the cat before adoption is finalized.
Follow us on Instagram @BrewingGoodCoffeeCo or @SavageCatsMD for event announcements.
We also schedule private meetings at the shop with approved applicants any time. We will arrange this with you once your application is received and approved.
Step 4: Adoption Agreement
We do not have adoption fees, but we do have adoption requirements. These are outlined in our adoption agreement, which is signed on the day a Savage Cat goes to their new home. The agreement covers the requirements of basic daily care, a minimum of yearly veterinary care, and that the cat stays under the care of the signing adopter for the rest of that cat’s life.
If an adopter is unable or unwilling to continue caring for their adopted cat at any time for any reason, we require that the cat is returned to us. We do not allow the cat to be surrendered to another rescue or shelter or re-homed to an adopter that has not been through our application process. Because we make this lifetime commitment to all our Savage Cats, their microchips are and remain registered to us as the primary contact.

Major
Male
Birthday: May 18, 2024 (approximate)
Medical: neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Major is part of the Pride Family, with mom Rainey Lu (adopted) and siblings Marsha and Mercury, rescued in June 2024. Major is affectionate and playful with people and his siblings. He has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. He has not lived with children yet, but could be happy in a home with older, cat-savvy kids. He would love to find a family with another cat he can play with, or he’d like to be adopted with his sister Marsha.
Major’s defining trait is: AFFECTIONATE!
This is what his foster mom says about him: Major is a major snuggler! He will be in your lap during the day while you work from home or read and he will sleep in bed with you at night! He is super chatty when you are getting wet food ready and will sing you the song of his people… but then will be quiet and snuggly after to reward you. He sometimes sits back and watches his siblings play, but will also jump in and play chase. His favorite toy is the ball tower; he can play with it for such a long time!
Marsha
Female
Birthday: May 18, 2024 (approximate)
Medical: spayed, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Marsha is part of the Pride Family, with mom Rainey Lu (adopted) and siblings Major and Mercury, rescued in June 2024. Marsha is affectionate and playful with people and her siblings. She has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. She has not lived with children yet, but could be happy in a home with older, cat-savvy kids. She would love to find a family with another cat she can play with, or she’d like to be adopted with one of her brothers.
Marsha’s defining trait is: ADVENTUROUS!
This is what her foster mom says about her: When Marsha isn’t napping in my lap, she is invariably on an adventure! She loves high vantage points so she can be the queen of her surroundings and she is always up for play time. She does have a favorite toy - ALL OF THEM! She runs from one to the next and therefore must always be spoiled with her choice of catnip kickers, plushies, and bell balls. Marsha can always convince her brothers to run zooms at her command. She started off as the shyest of the Pride Family kittens but has blossomed into the boss and would love to bring one of her brothers with her to her adoptive home.
Mercury
Male
Birthday: May 18, 2024 (approximate)
Medical: neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Mercury is part of the Pride Family, with mom Rainey Lu (adopted) and siblings Marsha and Mercury, rescued in June 2024. Mercury is affectionate and playful with people and his siblings. He has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. He has been a little nervous around young children at meet-and-greets, so he’d like to live with people over 12. He would love to find a family with another cat he can play with, or he’d like to be adopted with his sister Marsha.
Mercury’s defining trait is: CURIOUS!
This is what his foster mom says about him: Mercury is a snuggly boy and loves playing with his siblings, but he is also pretty independent. He requires 15 minutes of one-on-one snuggle time every morning and will try to keep me from getting up if I dob’t oblige, but then he can play happily by himself for long stretches of time (but would love for you to join). Mercury is super curious about water! Any time the water is running in the shower or tub, he is there. He has indeed fallen in, which he does not love, but he keeps coming back for more.
Berry
Male
Birthday: September 8, 2024
Medical: neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Berry is part of the Cheesecake Family, with mom Cheesecake (long-term foster) and siblings Vanilla Bean, Turtle, and Pumpkin Spice, rescued in September 2024. Berry is affectionate and playful with people and his siblings. He has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. He has not lived with children yet, but could be happy in a home with gentle, cat-savvy kids. He would love to find a family with another cat he can play with, or he’d like to be adopted with his brother Vanilla Bean.
Berry’s defining trait is: HE’S BIG!
This is what his foster mom says about him: Berry was the first born of the Mini Cheesecakes and has been the biggest of them all since day one. He’s still a young kitten, but I think he is going to be a large cat. He seems to be aware of his size and does not overwhelm his smaller siblings, Pumpkin Spice and Turtle. They have definitely taught him about playing gently and he is such a good boy as a result. His brother Vanilla Bean can take a bit of roughhousing so I find those two engaged in shenanigans together. Berry loves people and purrs at the slightest ear scratch, but he also really loves kitty cat playtime, so he should go to a home with another friendly cat or with his sweetie brother Vanilla Bean.
Vanilla Bean
Male
Birthday: September 8, 2024
Medical: neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Vanilla Bean is part of the Cheesecake Family, with mom Cheesecake (long-term foster) and siblings Berry, Turtle, and Pumpkin Spice, rescued in September 2024. Vanilla Bean is affectionate and playful with people and his siblings. He has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. He has not lived with children yet, but could be happy in a home with gentle, cat-savvy kids. He would love to find a family with another cat he can play with, or he’d like to be adopted with his brother Berry.
Vanilla Bean’s defining trait is: QUIETLY CONFIDENT!
This is what his foster mom says about him: Vanilla Bean was the first of the Mini Cheesecakes to open up to people and start exploring his foster home - and the first to not be scared of the dog! His confidence is not pushy or showy. He’s sure of himself, but polite and endlessly sweet to the other cats in the house (and the dog, too!). I will find him suddenly, quietly at my feet, rubbing against my leg and purring, just saying hello, and then he’s off to see what everyone else is doing. He wants to be everyone’s friend. He snuggle-puddles with his siblings for hours on end, but can certainly keep up with them when it’s time to play. Also, his ears are enormous. He’d thrive having another cat around when his people are busy or not home; he recommends his brother Berry if anyone is looking for the most adorable two-cheesecakes-for-one deal.
Turtle
Female
Birthday: September 8, 2024
Medical: spayed vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Turtle is part of the Cheesecake Family, with mom Cheesecake (long-term foster) and brothers Berry, Vanilla Bean, and Pumpkin Spice, rescued in September 2024. Turtle is affectionate and playful with people and her siblings. She has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. She has not lived with children yet, but could be happy in a home with gentle, cat-savvy kids. She would love to be adopted with her brother Pumpkin Spice.
Turtle’s defining trait is: CURIOUS!
This is what her foster mom says about her: Turtle hissed at me when she was just a few days old, before her eyes were open; ready to take on the world before she had taken her first steps. I have watched her blossom from this cautious creature to one who is confident, adventurous, and affectionate with both me and the other cats in the house. She loves evening lap-time with her people, but will not hesitate to jump up to chase a toy or her brothers around the house. Turtle is an engineer, a mathematician, and an aspiring mountain-climber. This means she WILL figure out how to get on top of your refrigerator. This gorgeous calico queen keep us on our toes, but she also makes us laugh and awwww countless times a day. She and her brother Pumpkin Spice, the smallest of the four kittens in their litter, seem to be magnetized to each other and it would be lovely if these pint-sized playmates could continue growing up together.
Pumpkin Spice
Male
Birthday: September 8, 2024
Medical: neutered, vaccinated for rabies and distemper, tested negative for FIV/FeLV
Pumpkin Spice is part of the Cheesecake Family, with mom Cheesecake (long-term foster) and siblings Berry, Vanilla Bean, and Turtle, rescued in September 2024. Pumpkin Spice is affectionate and playful with people and his siblings. He has lived with a cat-friendly large dog and other cats. He has not lived with children yet, but could be happy in a home with gentle, cat-savvy kids. He would love to be adopted with his sister Turtle.
Pumpkin Spice’s defining trait is: AFFECTIONATE!
This is what his foster mom says about him: All of the Mini Cheesecakes are lap cats, but Pumpkin Spice is first in line. He follows me around the house, meowing hello to me and settling in my lap or at my feet. He immediately flirts with everyone he meets - including at the vet’s office - waving his little head back and forth and flopping onto his back, showing off his soft little belly. His dark orange swirly fur makes him irresistible. He still gets the zoomies though and will fly around the house with his siblings, wrestling with each other and batting around any toy (or piece of paper, or the dog’s tail) they see. Pumpkin Spice and his sister Turtle always seem to find each other when it’s nap time and are most often paired together when snuggling in my lap. They are both on the smaller side and it would be lovely if these pint-sized playmates could continue growing up together.
